ACEC Scholarships
$12,000 AWARDED IN 2011

ACEC Indiana recognizes the importance of attracting talented college students to consulting engineering. ACEC Indiana's Associate Members organize an annual golf outing raising monies to provide exceptional scholarships to exceptional students. The winners of ACEC Indiana's scholarships are then eligible to compete at the national level.

Student Outreach Programs

Project Lead The Way
Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a program that helps develop critical thinking and career readiness in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields through hands-on, problem-based learning.  The program is administered to middle school and high school students, through classes that occur during the normal school day.  Teachers receive significant professional development training, but the courses themselves are not rigid.  Instead, the teachers have the flexibility to customize their curriculum to meet the needs of their students' environment.  Within PLTW, there are three separate programs:  Pathway to Engineering (PTE) and Biomedical Sciences (BMS) for high schools and the Gateway to Technology (GTT) for middle schools.

Over 350 schools in Indiana are involved in PLTW, with approximately two-thirds having the Pathway to Engineering (PTE) program.  A list of the schools is attached.  The schools are listed in alphabetical order and scrolling to the right reveals whether the school has PTE, BMS, and/or GTT programs.  Click here for the full list of Indiana Schools.

Volunteer Opportunities
Consulting engineers can become involved in PLTW by contacting a local, participating school.  Examples of possible opportunities are listed below.  The amount of time commitment varies, and is largely up to the volunteer to decide the level of involvement.

  • Participate in interviews with students to explain your educational background and profession
  • Judge and provide feedback on student presentations/projects
  • Meet with teachers to develop and discuss student projects
  • Conduct classroom presentations on your profession or explain real-world projects
  • Donate supplies and materials

ACE Mentors
ACE is a national program existing in dozens of cities throughout the US.   Each school year teams made up of students from local high schools prepare a design for a hypothetical project.  ACE of Indianapolis is currently in 5 high schools, North Central, Arsenal Tech, Decatur Central, Pike, and George Washington.  Teams are made up of students from those high schools interested in learning more about the construction industry and possibly following a career in professional fields related to construction.  At the end of the year, each team will present their design at a fundraising dinner attended by industry professionals.  ACE of Indianapolis awarded scholarships totaling $51,000 at the dinner to outstanding students.  A mentor is assigned to one high school.  Each school has approximately 8 – 10 mentors and the mentors meet with their student teams once every two weeks for approximately 1 ½ hrs to help with the team’s design.  It is an excellent program and very rewarding experience for the mentors.  Raun Love with CSO is the mentor committee chair.  If any ACEC members are interested in becoming a member, contact Raun Love LEED® AP, CSO Architects, Inc., (317) 848-7800. http://www.acementor.org/

IUPUI Minority Engineering Advancement Program
MEAP is a week-long, summer, non-residential camp on the IUPUI campus. MEAP is for students who have completed 6th through 11th grade levels. The camp is designed for students that are underrepresented in engineering and technology careers.

Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis
6th-12th grades. A typical program session takes place on Saturday morning. Students and facilitators meet at corporate sponsored offices to embark on the learning experience.

NSBE Pre College Initiative Program
The Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate the interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees.
